The politics of insurance and Psoriasis

Anyone with the chronic skin condition called “Psoriasis”
knows how uncomfortable, painful, and embarrassing it can be. To make matters
worse, research indicates that it may be hereditary, yet the exact cause of the
disease is unclear…

Speaking of “unclear”, as patients search for treatments
to clear up their Psoriasis, the rules seem to keep changing when it comes to
insurance coverage.

No one really fully understands how we got to this point, with
insurance providers and the whole insurance controversy, but it’s as painful as
Psoriasis.

If you go way back in time, you know “pre-Google”, the
“problem with insurance” starts with the federal government in my
humble opinion. You see, when American politicians unleashed the so-called,
“New Deal” engineered by FDR, medical care and bureaucrats began to
meet in the middle…

The creation of Medicare and Medicaid got the ball rolling, as
reimbursement was tied to what “government programs” would “pay
for”. Hospitals felt the pains as they had to juggle charges to offset
those “covered” by the new “insurance” programs. Soon
thereafter (again, we are talking before cell phones, cable TV, and Lady Gaga),
insurance companies jumped on the bandwagon and somehow, health care insurance became part of an employee’s compensation package. Do your own research if you want specifics, but what we have now is the result of decades of
“health” mismanagement, not “care”…

So flash forward to 2011 and your Psoriasis treatment. Well, the
insurance “providers” are now scrambling from the after-shocks of
“Obama-Care”, and employers are cutting everything from staples to
salary, while increasing “co-pays” for those that still have a job..

If you have Psoriasis, you already know the game. Depending on
your coverage, you may have to jump through hoops to have a treatment approved.  It varies from company to company, and health insurance in 2011 is as uncertain as is the political climate.

Recently, according to a leader at the National Psoriasis
Foundation, a major health insurer made it a little easier for those suffering
from the disease;

“On October 1. Regence BlueCross BlueShield removed criteria
requiring people with psoriatic disease to go through “steps” with
other treatments before two particular medications were covered.” Dan Farrington Chair, National Psoriasis
Foundation Board of Trustees

Good news I guess, but what about all the “steps” a
patient has to endure to have alternative treatments, other than
“medications”. Phototherapy, or “light therapy” has been
proven to be safe and effective for treating Psoriasis. When will those
“steps” be eliminated? Today, if you don’t want drugs or injections
and are concerned about the side-effects that are listed on package inserts of
most all Psoriasis prescriptions, good luck…

First you have to find a physician that offers
“phototherapy”, than you have to take treatments for a period of time
(usually 3 months), complete a “letter of medical necessity”, and
wait.

Wait for what you say, well Phototherapy is so safe, that patients
can have a “home unit” prescribed by their physician. Most
Dermatologists are well aware of the benefits of treating Psoriasis, Eczema,
and Vitiligo with the medical grade “lamps” used in a Phototherapy
system. It’s the Insurance company you might have trouble with, compliments of
our dysfunctional health care and governmental institutions.

Educate yourself on Psoriasis and how you can “clear up”
your skin, and the mess America has created regarding insurance
“reimbursement”. It is the age of the “empowered consumer”,
so arm yourself with knowledge and protect your own “skin”.  I would’nt count on any politican or insurance company to look out for me or my Psoriasis…

A Skin Secret?

With information retrieval at the fingertips of anyone with a computer (0r smart phone), it still amazes me how much there is to know, yet how little we do…

Take Psoriasis for instance, that chronic condition affecting over 7 million people in the U.S. alone.   You may have noticed the recent barrage of “patient driven” TV commercials sponsored by pharmaceutical giant, Abbott Labs.

Now I’ve got nothing against big drug companies, but come guys, tell the whole story.  Of course, they do if you listen closely and read the fine print.  Warning, warning, screams the package inserts of almost all Psoriasis prescription medications.  It’s not only “buyer beware” in this day and age of media hype and corporate take-overs, its “patient beware”.   Particularly if you suffer from Psoriasis…

As with most chronic skin conditions, there are alternatives.  Safer and just as effective treatments when compared to systemic protocols (i.e. drugs).

Perhaps serving as a sales and marketing professional in the “aesthetic” industry for so long has tainted my perspective, but I do have a little “secret”…

Light therapy, or “Phototherapy” works, and it works well.  Yet again, it remains hidden by the onslaught of advertising pushed upon the public.  Drugs and only drugs are not the only solution.

Simply, “phototherapy” is the use of medical grade lamps producing a specific “band” of light.  It’s been used for decades by leading Dermatologists around the world.  From Psoriasis to Eczema, to Vitiligo, Phototherapy has been proven to be safe, effective, and enhance the quality of life!

Even with its long history of efficacy and testimonies, to this day millions are unaware of this natural skin care secret, this “Mother nature in a box”.

Recently on a shopping trip, I happened to mention “phototherapy” in a shoe store to the clerk.  She had asked what I did for a living and before I knew it, there were 3 people inquiring about this “secret” treatment for Psoriasis.

Do yourself a favor if you have Psoriasis or some other chronic skin condition.  Use your computer for something other than playing games or lurking on Facebook.  Do a Google, or Bing, or your favorite “search engine” on “Phototherapy”; specifically “Narrow band” phototherapy and see for yourself.  Dont let the big corporations keep all the “secrets” to themselves….

Psoriasis and YOU!

Who gets psoriasis?

People who get psoriasis usually have one or more person in their family who has psoriasis. Not everyone who has a family member with psoriasis will get psoriasis. But psoriasis is common. In the United States, about 7.5 million people have psoriasis. Most people, about 80%, have plaque psoriasis.

Psoriasis can begin at any age. Most people get psoriasis between 15 and 30 years of age. By age 40, most people who will get psoriasis, about 75%, have psoriasis. Another common time for psoriasis to begin is between 50 and 60 years of age.

Whites get psoriasis more often than other races.

Infants and young children are more likely to get inverse psoriasis and guttate psoriasis.

What causes psoriasis?

Scientists are still trying to learn everything that happens inside the body to cause psoriasis. We know that psoriasis is not contagious.

Thanks to ongoing research, there are many treatments for psoriasis. It is important to work with a dermatologist to find treatment that works for you and fits your lifestyle. Every treatment has benefits, drawbacks, and possible side effects.

Before you see a dermatologist for treatment, it helps to know about the treatment options. This knowledge will help you work with your dermatologist to create a treatment plan that is right for you.

Psoriasis is a chronic (long-lasting) disease of the immune system. It cannot be cured. This means that most people have psoriasis for life. By teaming up with a dermatologist who treats psoriasis, you can find a treatment plan that works for you.

Dermatologists encourage their patients who have psoriasis to take an active role in managing this disease. By taking an active role, you can reduce the effects that psoriasis has on your quality of life.
